Braves trade for Cardinals P Erick Fedde to address decimated pitching staff ahead of deadline

A 44-60 start hasn’t swayed the Atlanta Braves from buying ahead of MLB’s trade deadline.

The Braves announced on Sunday that they’ve acquired right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

The move addresses pitching depth for a starting rotation that’s been decimated by injury. At the time of Sunday’s trade, Chris Sale (rib fracture), Reynaldo López (shoulder inflammation), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow fracture), Grant Holmes (elbow inflammation) and AJ Smith-Shawver (UCL tear) were all on the 60-day injured list.

Smith-Shawver underwent Tommy John surgery, and his season is over. The Braves moved Holmes to the 60-day IL to make room on the roster for Fedde.

Fedde, 32, is in his eighth MLB season. He’s started 20 games for the Cardinals in 2025 with a 5.22 ERA and 1.505 WHIP. He’s not a high-end starter, but he is a starting pitcher, which the Braves are in desperate need of with the bulk of their rotation facing long-term injuries.

The Braves entered Sunday in fourth place in the NL East, 16.5 games behind the first-place New York Mets. They were 12 games behind the San Diego Padres for the final wild-card berth in the National League.

Their playoff hopes are grim. But the Braves need to field pitchers for the remainder of the season, and the acquisition of Fedde addresses that need.
