Elijah Pierce (21-2, 17 KOs) stopped Michael Dasmarinas (36-5-2, 25 KOs) in the ninth round for the WBO International featherweight championship on Friday night at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, Georgia. The contest was halted at 2:01 of the ninth round.
In the first round, Dasmarinas outlanded Pierce and, in the final thirty seconds, dropped Pierce with a counter left on the chin for an 8-count from Referee Malik Waleed. In the second round, it could have gone either way. In the third round, Dasmarinas edged out Pierce.
In the fourth round, Dasmarinas kept going backwards, countering Pierce well. In the fifth round, due to a headbutt, Pierce was cut on the right eye. Dasmarinas continued countering him well. In the sixth round, at times, Pierce would walk in with his hands down and get hit by Dasmarinas. Midway Dasmarinas suffered a small cut on his right eyebrow.
In the seventh round, Pierce kept coming forward, landing an overhand left only once. Dasmarinas continued to outland Pierce. In the eighth round, Pierce went more to the body when Dasmarinas stood in front of him. It was a good round for Pierce.
In the ninth round, Pierce dropped Dasmarinas with a push and left for an 8-count from referee Waleed in the first minute. Dasmarinas looked exhausted. In the final minute, Pierce landed a right hook to the body and then on the chin, dropping Dasmarinas on his butt for the count from Referee Waleed.
In the co-main event, 2021 Olympic Bronze Medalist, IBO and IBF World junior middleweight champ southpaw Oshae ‘Suga’ Jones (9-0, 3 KOs) won a 10-round split decision over No. 2 ranked Elia ‘Soul Snatcher’ Carranza (11-2, 3 KOs).
In the first round, Jones outlanded Carranza. In the second round’s final seconds, Jones landed a pair of right hooks to the chin, rocking Carranza. In the fourth round, it was a better one for Carranza, though not win the round.
In the fifth round, it was close, with Jones stealing the round at the end. In the sixth and seventh rounds, Jones continued to outwork Carranza. In the eighth round, Jones continued winning.
In the ninth round, Carranza made a fight of it, though losing another round. In the tenth and final round, Jones took another, outlanding a game Carranza.
The scores were 96-94 Jones, 100-90 Carranza, and 98-92 Jones. Malik Waleed was the referee.
Super featherweight Haven Brady, Jr. (16-0, 6 KOs) easily defeated DeMichael Harris (12-2-1, 11 KOs) by a 10-round unanimous decision.
In the first three rounds, Brady outworked Harris, having him on the defense. In the fourth round’s midway point, Brady landed half a dozen unanswered punches, having Harris against the ropes.
In the fifth round’s final minute, referee Antonio Mohan took a point from Harris for a low blow. Another round for Brady. In the sixth round, Brady hurt Harris with a left to the body midway in the round. In the seventh round, Brady had a big round out landing Harris. In the eighth round’s midway point, Brady landed four left hooks to the chin of Harris.
In the ninth round’s final minute, Brady hurt Harris with a left hook on the chin. He took another round. In the tenth and final round, Brady had Harris out on his feet in the final minute with a pair of left hooks to the chin. Brady trains out of Philadelphia under trainer Bozy Ennis. It was his first ten-rounder.
The scores were 100-89, 100-89, and 100-89.
Welterweight southpaw Morgan ‘Mo Millions’ Griggie (8-1, 5 KOs) lost a decision to Maximus ‘Different Breed’ Garland (9-0, 7 KOs) by a six-round unanimous decision.
In the second round’s final minute, Garland rocked Griggie with a right to the chin. Winning both rounds. In the third round’s final seconds, Garland rocked Griggie with a right on the chin.
In the fourth round after a minute southpaw Griggie landed his first solid punch a lead left on the chin of Garland. Garland controlled the round the rest of the way. In the fifth round’s final minute, Garland hurt Griggie with a right to the body. In the sixth and final round, Griffie had his best round in a competitive match. Griggie had swelling under his right eye at the end.
The scores were 58-56, 58-56, and 59-55. Antonio Mohan was the referee.
Super middleweight ‘The Brickbuster’ Nathan Lugo (5-0, 5 KOs) knocked out Rashad McWilliams (4-1, 3 KOs) at 2:39 of the first round of a scheduled six rounds.
In the first round, after twenty seconds, a double right from Lugo on the chin dropped McWilliams for an 8-count from Referee Antonio Mohan. In the final minute, Lugo slipped a right hand and countered with a right on the chin, driving McWilliams across the ring to the bottom of the ropes into a sitting position, being counted out by Referee Mohan.
Super featherweight ‘Notorious’ Julio Gomez (7-3-2, 6 KOs) lost by six-round unanimous decision to Desmond “X” Lyons (10-3, 2 KOs).
In the first two rounds, Lyons, returning to the ring after two years, showed a good left hook in taking both close rounds from Gomez. In the third round, Lyons had a good round, dropping Gomez with a left hook on the chin for an 8-count from referee Malik Waleed in the final minute. Gomez was cut on the right eyebrow in the first minute of the round.
In the fourth and fifth rounds, Lyons controlled the action. In the sixth and final round, Gomez, knowing he was behind, put pressure on Lyons to take the round. Lyons had swelling outside his right eye at the end.
The scores were 58-55, 58-55, and 59-54.
Middleweight Elijah ‘Kaboom’ Lugo (3-0, 1 KOs) stopped southpaw Marquis ‘Poncho Blue Head’ Williams (3-3, 2 KOs) at 1:47 of the fifth round of a scheduled six rounds.
In the first three rounds, the 18-year-old Lugo, with over 200 amateur fights, employs an awkward style that appears to be seeking a knockout. Southpaw Williams keeps a jab in his face preventing it in a close fight that Lugo has an edge.
In the fourth round, referee Malik Waleed took a point from Williams for holding. In the fifth round’s first minute, Lugo landed a right uppercut to the mid-section, dropping Williams for an 8-count from referee Waleed. With a little over a minute remaining, Lugo landed another body shot with his right, dropping Williams, who was counted out.
