ENGLAND have secured their spot in the semi-finals of the Women’s Euros in dramatic circumstances.
The Lionesses found themselves 2-0 down inside the opening half an hour after individual errors gifted Sweden a perfect start.
Sarina Wiegman’s side had to wait until the 79th minute to get on the scoresheet as Chloe Kelly’s stunning cross found the head of Lucy Bronze at the back post to set up a grandstand finish.
Moments later, Kelly was the provider again as Michelle Agyemang pounced on a scramble in the box to get England back on level terms and take the tie to extra time.
Neither side could take advantage in the additional period, which meant the tie was decided by a nerve-racking penalty shootout.
The Lionesses came out victorious on spot kicks after Smilla Holmberg missed the decisive penalty in sudden death to send the defending champions through to the last four.
