OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

The 2025 Open Championship returns this week to Royal Portrush, nestled along Northern Ireland’s dramatic Causeway Coast.

The last time golf’s oldest major graced these shores in 2019, Shane Lowry produced a career-defining performance in front of an adoring home crowd. Now, six years later, the world’s best will once again face the stern test of the Dunluce Links and the unpredictable elements of the Atlantic.

Royal Portrush is revered not only for its breathtaking vistas but also for its championship pedigree.

The reimagined course, shaped by architect Martin Ebert ahead of the 2019 Open, remains a formidable examination of shotmaking, mental fortitude, and patience. Holes like the par-4 5th (“White Rocks”), the brutally long 7th (“Curran Point”), and the infamous 16th (“Calamity Corner”) will demand the very best.

RORY RETURNS TO A SPECIAL VENUE

Few players will arrive at Royal Portrush with more attention than Rory McIlroy. After completing the career Grand Slam earlier this year at Augusta National, the Northern Irishman now returns to a venue steeped in personal significance. It was here in 2019 that McIlroy endured a heart-breaking early exit, missing the cut after an opening 79 in front of a raucous home crowd.

Many believe this could be the year he conquers Portrush under far different circumstances. His ball-striking remains among the game’s best, and if he can handle the emotional weight of the occasion, he’s a clear favourite.

SHANE LOWRY: THE HOMECOMING CHAMPION

One of the most emotional victories in recent Open history came at Royal Portrush in 2019, when Shane Lowry lifted the Claret Jug in front of jubilant Irish fans. That Sunday remains etched in the memory of golf fans across the world, Lowry holding his nerve amid mounting pressure and wild weather, ultimately cruising to a six-shot win.

The Offaly native now returns to the site of his greatest triumph with a deep well of experience and pride. While he hasn’t added another major to his resume, Lowry continues to be one of the steadiest performers on the biggest stages, and few would be surprised to see him in contention once again on familiar turf.

THE FIELD: MAJOR CHAMPIONS & LINKS MASTERS

A 156-player field featuring past champions, rising stars, and links aficionados will compete for the Claret Jug. Defending champion Xander Schauffele arrives with confidence, while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler looks to add to his growing major tally.

Bryson DeChambeau enters in strong form. Two-time major winner and past Claret Jug holder, Collin Morikawa and rising star Ludvig Åberg are also among the most dangerous ball-strikers in windy conditions. As ever, the Open offers the possibility of a surprise contender emerging from the pack.

Here’s an overview of the key contenders and their current betting odds

TOP CONTENDERS & ODDS

  • Rory McIlroy (6/1)
With the career Grand Slam complete and a home crowd behind him, McIlroy looks to erase the ghosts of 2019 and claim a second Claret Jug.

  • Scottie Scheffler (9/2)
The reigning world No. 1 arrives off another dominant season. His steady brilliance and tee-to-green consistency make him a top pick.

  • Bryson DeChambeau (20/1)
His power game continues to evolve, and with growing experience on links layouts, he could be a force.

  • Xander Schauffele (20/1)
The defending Open champion seeks to become the first to go back-to-back since Padraig Harrington.

  • Justin Thomas (40/1)
Recently back in the winner’s circle, Thomas brings confidence and plenty of links experience.

  • Jon Rahm (12/1)
One of the game’s most complete players, Rahm’s creativity and firepower are assets on any Open track.

ONES TO WATCH

  • Shane Lowry (22/1)
The 2019 champion returns to the scene of his greatest moment. Comfortable in tough conditions and battle-tested.

  • Ludvig Åberg (22/1)
A rising force in the game, the Swede’s composure and precision have already earned him a major title.

  • Collin Morikawa (25/1)
A master of control, Morikawa’s iron play is perfectly suited for links golf.

  • Brooks Koepka (40/1)
The five-time major winner can never be counted out when silverware is on the line.

  • Jordan Spieth (50/1)
A past Open champion with a unique skillset built for links. Creative, scrappy, and always dangerous.

WIND, WEATHER, AND DRAMA GUARANTEED

With deep rough, punishing bunkers, and the ever-present winds of the North Atlantic, Royal Portrush promises a true Open test. Whether it’s redemption for Rory, a repeat dream for Lowry, or another new name etched into golf history, the 2025 Open Championship is set to deliver unforgettable drama on one of the game’s most spectacular stages.
