Mets select Michigan infielder Mitch Voit with No. 38 pick in 2025 MLB Draft

Mets select Michigan infielder Mitch Voit with No. 38 pick in 2025 MLB Draft

The Mets selected Michigan infielder Mitch Voit with the 38th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.

“When you’re scouting, you sit there and you start to check all the boxes, he checked them all,” Kris Gross, Mets’ vice president, amateur scouting, said Sunday. “Ecstatic to get him there at 38.”

Voit, 20, who was announced as a two-way player after pitching and playing the infield with the Big Ten school, said the plan is to focus solely on being a position player, likely as a second baseman, as he begins his professional career.

After undergoing internal brace surgery on his throwing arm in July 2024, he managed to complete his rehab in time to play 56 games for the Wolverines during the 2025 season and had a fine time swinging the bat. In his lone collegiate season as just a position player, he tallied 17 doubles, four triples, 14 home runs, and 60 RBI with a .346/.471/.668 slash line for a 1.140 OPS while walking 40 times to 34 strikeouts.

When asked to describe his game, Voit said, "I'm a winner, plainy put."

"Do anything that it takes for the team to win," he said during his post-draft media availability on Sunday night. "I just go out there, love the game, enjoy the game, and play to win. And at the end of the day, that's my goal, and everything else falls in line."

Gross said the club believes Voit can “affect the game in numerous ways.”

“Explosive, athletic. We believe he stays on the dirt and excels at multiple infield positions. But the bat really stood out,” Gross said, mentioning that in his first year focusing on hitting, they saw Voit make a lot of strides in the box. “The plate discipline improved, the contact, and the ability to impact. It’s a short, compact, explosive swing.”

When asked about his tools, Voit said it is "hard to decide" what his best attributes are. "My biggest tool as a player, you could say, is a collection of all my tools," he said. "I have so many things that I use to help me win at any given moment, whether it's the ability to slow my heartrate down in a big situation and come through for the team or whether it's always being a spark in the lineup, or always being a lock down defender out there. Something that I got to showcase a lot more this year was my ability to run the bases and use my speed to my advantage."

On joining the Mets, Voit said he believes he fits in "real good with that kind of program and organization" because "they're winners."

"That's where I like to be," he said, "and the competitiveness of the New York Mets just makes me that much more excited to come here."

Voit said the Mets began speaking to him during Michigan's preseason meetings, speaking with area scout Chad Langley, and that he was "stoked" to be selected by the club.

Overall, Voit batted .303 with a .962 OPS in 631 at-bats over 169 games with Michigan with 46 doubles, seven triples, 35 home runs, and 138 RBI. He also spent time all around the diamond during his time in college, playing 51 games at third base in 2023, 33 games at first, and 22 in the outfield in 2024, before appearing in 56 games at second in his final season.

"It helps me out a ton, but it [also] helps whoever I play for out a ton," Voit said about that positional flexibility. "Because there's always guys who can't necessarily move around, and for me to be able to fill our team's needs in a spot where we don't have someone, I think brings great value and allows for our team to get that much better."

The organization believes Voit will be an infielder, but they like his ability to move around the diamond, so they can keep his bat in the lineup as he moves his way up the minor league ranks. “The athlete, the hands, he's got a big arm, he used to be 95, 96 [mph] off the mound," Gross said. "He presents a lot of options, and we’re definitely gonna explore those."

While he has not done any pitching activities since undergoing surgery, Voit said he is willing to do whatever it takes to make it to the big leagues.

"I will do absolutely anything to make it to the big leagues as a New York Met, so you can't rule anything out," Voit said about his two-way prospects, adding later: "This year was a position-focused year for me, and I know that's what attracted the Mets to me was the potential as a position player. But like I said, whatever it takes. If that's what happens, that's what happens."

During his last year pitching and hitting in 2024, the right-hander had a 5.49 ERA and 1.412 WHIP in 62.1 innings over 10 starts, with 41 strikeouts to 16 walks. That year at the plate, he had 20 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs with 46 RBI and a .292/.373/.572 slash line with a .945 OPS. He struck out 61 times to 23 walks.

As a pitcher at Michigan, he posted a 4.67 ERA and 1.332 WHIP over 98.1 innings and 29 games (11 starts) with 66 strikeouts to 28 walks.

New York's first pick, which has a $2.57 million slot value, came at No. 38 in the Competitive Balance Round A, as their first selection dropped 10 spots due to exceeding the luxury tax threshold by $40 million or more last season, picking ahead of the Yankees (No. 39) and Dodgers (No. 40), who fell that far for the same reason. The Mets have the second-lowest bonus pool in the sport at $5,465,900, which is ahead of only the Yankees.

New York later took University of Central Florida infielder Antonio Jimenezwith the 102nd overall pick.

Joe DeMayo's Reaction…

Voit, a former two-way player, is likely to be deployed as just a hitter in pro ball. He has excellent bat speed and in-zone contact rates. His swing is natural at lofting the ball in the air, with a preference to the pull side, where he posts above-average exit velocities.

He is a plus athlete who acclimated himself well to second base, but with a healthy arm after he underwent internal brace surgery as a sophomore, Voit should have enough arm strength for third base if the Mets want to try him there.

I look at Voit as more of a high-floor type of player rather than a big ceiling. As a college junior, he has a chance to be a relatively quick riser through the minors.
