Boxing Results: Hamzah Sheeraz delivers a crushing fifth-round knockout against Edgar Berlanga

Hamzah Sheeraz (22-0-1, 18 KOs) stopped Edgar ‘The Chosen One’ Berlanga (23-2, 18 KOs) at 0:17 of the fifth round in the main event in a WBC super middleweight title eliminator on Saturday night at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.

In the fourth round’s final minute, a combination from Sheeraz dropped Berlanga. He managed to beat the count of referee David Fields when a right hook from Sheeraz dropped Berlanga again as the bell sounded. In the fifth round, Sheeraz immediately went after Berlanga, dropping him as referee Fields called a halt.

WBC World lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) beat previously unbeaten WBC Interim lightweight champion William ‘Camaron’ Zepeda (33-1, 27 KOs) by a 12-round unanimous decision.

In a close first round, Zepeda worked the body of Stevenson, who has better hand speed but not enough power to keep Zepeda off. In the second and third rounds, Stevenson came back well, with each having their moments, but Stevenson’s hand speed won him the rounds.

The fourth through the sixth, it was Stevenson getting the better of the harder-hitting Zepeda with his hand speed, countering him well.

In the seventh round, Zepeda came forward, working the body while Stevenson went to the head. With a minute remaining, Zepeda landed a four-punch combination only to have Stevenson come back to outland him. From the eighth through the tenth, Stevenson countered Zepeda, taking all three rounds.

In the eleventh round, Stevenson tied Zepeda up in the first minute in one of the first clinches of the fight. Stevenson kept picking his spots as Zepeda kept coming forward, winning another round. In the twelfth and final round, it was all Stevenson, though Zepeda never quit coming forward.

The Scores were 118-110, 118-110, and 119-109. Ricky Gonzalez was the referee.

WBC World Super lightweight champ southpaw Alberto Puello (24-1, 10 KOs) lost a 12-round majority decision to the former IBF 140-lb champion Subriel Matias (23-2, 22 KOs).

In the first two rounds, it was all Puello landing almost at will as Matias walked toward him. In the third and fourth rounds, Matias came back well enough to take both rounds. In the fifth and sixth rounds, Matias went to the head and body as Puello worked the body in a pair of close rounds.

In the seventh round, Matias had Puello against the ropes for much of the round, working the body. In the eighth round, Matias continued working the body as Puello countered, but not enough to win the round. The fight looks even after eight rounds.

In the ninth and tenth rounds, it was all Matias backing Puello up for most of the round, going to the body. In the eleventh round, Puello countered well enough to take the round. In the twelfth and final round, Matias was cut on the right eyebrow halfway through the round. He kept coming forward, driving Puello backwards for the most part. The fight could go to anyone at the bell.

The scores were 115-113, 115-113, and 114-114. Eric Dali was the referee.

Light heavyweight David Morrell (12-1, 9 KOs)  won a 10-round split decision over Imam Khataev (10-1, 9 KOs).

In the first round’s final seconds, Khataev rocked Morrell with a right on the chin. In the second round, there was swelling under the left eye of Morell. In the final minute, Khataev was cut on the right eyebrow by a left from Morell. In the third round, Khataev scored to the head and body of Morrell, taking a 2-1 lead in rounds.

In the fifth round’s final 20 seconds, Khataev dropped Morrell with a right on the chin for an 8-count from referee Eddie Claudio. In the sixth round, Morrell came back well as Khataev started looking tired. In the seventh round, it went back and forth in a close round. In the eighth round, Morrell started fast for half a round before Khataev took over in another round too close to call.

In the ninth round, both had their moments as Morrell rocked Khataev with a right uppercut with just over a minute remaining. Khatev came back, landing half a dozen punches. Morell came back with four of his own. In the tenth and final round, Khatev started fast for the first minute before Morell took over, rocking Khatev with a right on the chin with a minute remaining to take the round

The scores were 98-96 and 95-94 for Morrell, and 95-94 for Khataev.

2021 Olympic Gold Medalist Lightweight southpaw Reito Tsutsumi (2-0, 1 KO) stopped Michael ‘The Puerto Rican’ Ruiz (2-8-1) at 0:28 of the second round of a scheduled four rounds.

In the first round, Tsutsumi dropped Ruiz for an 8-count from referee Eric Dali with a right to the body with a minute remaining. Again, he dropped Ruiz with a body shot in the final seconds.
