Edgar Berlanga Has Opportunity To Enhance His Star Status With Win Over Sheeraz

Edgar Berlanga believes he’s one of the elite stars of boxing, and he will get an opportunity to present his case at The Ring Magazine III when he faces undefeated super-middleweight contender Hamzah Sheeraz (21-0, 17 KOs) on Saturday night July 12 at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York, live on DAZN PPV.

This highly anticipated bout between Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz has the potential to be the fight of the night. The winner of this contest will put himself in prime position to receive a shot at the undisputed super-middleweight crown.

When Edgar Berlanga turned pro back in 2016, he was on his way to becoming an instant star. In his first sixteen fights, Berlanga posted sixteen first-round knockouts. Berlanga had a lot of momentum, but the momentum stalled when Berlanga was taken the distance by three  gatekeepers.

After building an unbelievable KO streak, Berlanga proceeded to go through a three-year period without posting a single knockout. Finally, in February 2024, Berlanga stopped Padriag McCrory in the sixth round when he landed a hard overhand right.

The impressive victory over McCrory earned Berlanga a shot at Canelo Alvarez and the undisputed 168-pound crown. After getting dropped by Canelo in the third, Berlanga fought a very intelligent fight, but unfortunately, he lost via unanimous decision.

Six months later, Berlanga bounced back by scoring a first-round knockout over Jonathan Gonzalez Ortiz. Now Edgar Berlanga is set to face a very skilled boxer who is making his debut at 168.

On a domestic level, British-Pakistani boxer Hamzah Sheeraz was delivering spectacular performances and impressing his audience in the UK. On the night of June 1, 2024, Sheeraz took advantage of his opportunity to display his talents on a world level.

In the Riyadh Season 5v5 event, Hamzah Sheeraz faced the hard-hitting, undefeated American boxer Austin “Ammo” Williams. Sheeraz dropped Williams in the 10th, and after Sheeraz landed a flurry of hard shots, the referee stepped in to put a halt to the contest in the 11th.

With the victory, Hamzah Sheeraz put the middleweight division on notice. Eight months later, Sheeraz fought the WBC world champion Carlos Adames, but at the conclusion of the 12-round contest, the bout was ruled a split-decision draw.

Now, on the night of July 12th, the 26-year-old Hamzah Sheeraz will make his debut as a super-middleweight. Sheeraz is not taking the easy route as he is making his 168-pound debut against a man who is talented and very determined.

Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) is determined to be recognized as one of the elite stars of the fight game. The 28-year-old Brooklyn, New York, native of Puerto Rican descent has the punching power, the look, and the attitude of a superstar boxer, but the one thing he needs to elevate his status is a signature win.

Hamzah Sheeraz is a boxer-puncher who has all of the offensive tools. If Edgar Berlanga can overwhelm Sheeraz with his power and aggression, and make a definitive statement, that will definitely elevate Berlanga’s status as a boxing star.

During the promotion of this matchup, Berlanga has made several attempts as it relates to intimidating his opponent. The Berlanga vs Sheeraz fight is guaranteed to be an entertaining bout because both men are fighting for a title opportunity, but in addition to that, one boxer is fighting for status, and the other is fighting for respect.
