Fans Overwhelmingly Against Tyson Fury’s Return for a Trilogy Fight with Oleksandr Usyk

Fans Overwhelmingly Against Tyson Fury’s Return for a Trilogy Fight with Oleksandr Usyk

Fans overwhelmingly are against the idea of Tyson Fury coming out of his brief retirement to get a trilogy fight against unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

No Earned Fury Title Shot

Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) lost both fights against Usyk in 2024 and doesn’t rate a third title shot without getting off his backside and earning it by beating the top contenders.

“I don’t agree with that. They were both very good fights to watch. So, why wouldn’t you want to see them again? They were close fights,” said promoter Frank Warren to BoxNation, reacting to being told that some fans don’t want to see a third fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.

Unsporting Trilogy

There would be enough fans who would want to watch the third Fury-Usyk fight to bring in a lot of PPV buys. Still, it would be widely criticized by fans as unsporting if Fury is given a third straight fight against Oleksandr after losing the first two.

In sports, you don’t see that kind of thing. Tyson should have to beat a top contender like Moses Itauma or Filip Hrgovic to get a title shot against Usyk. He has no intentions of fighting either of those fighters, and for good reason. Fury would lose.

Tyson is a very old 36, and even in his prime, he’d likely be knocked out by both of those fighters. When he was 27, he barely beat 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko in a razor-close and very boring fight. Turki Alalshikh should just focus on matching Fury against Anthony Joshua because no one would grumble about that. AJ is beltless, coming off a knockout, and viewed as well past his prime.

“The fact of the matter is, they were close fights. If Usyk gets beat, it’s still a good fight. He’s made that very clear, and he’s also made it clear about fighting in Riyadh,” said Warren when told that Fury wants the trilogy match against Usyk in England. You go where the money is, and the big money is at Wembley [Stadium]. That has the capacity. That’s the 94, 96,000 seat venue.”

Usyk Domination Clear

Well, if we want to look at the true picture of what the two fights were between Fury and Usyk, they weren’t close. Fury should have been knocked out in the ninth round but was saved by the referee in a weird move that tainted the fight. In the rematch, Usyk dominated Fury in every round. Many fans had Usyk winning 12 to 0.

I watched the fight and had it as a shutout for Oleksandr. Fury came close to winning none of the rounds. However, if we want to humor the idea that the two fights were close, Fury still lost both, and for that reason, he shouldn’t be getting a third title shot. Fans don’t want to see an old, slow, faded Fury get schooled in a third fight.
