Wimbledon champion has blood pressure taken during medical delay in worrying scenes before crashing out in tears

WIMBLEDON champion Barbora Krejcikova was reduced to tears as her title defence was ended.

The Czech champ, 29, needed her blood pressure taken during a dramatic final set.

Krejcikova was in tears at the back of the court before serving to stay in the match, won by American Emma Navarro in three sets.

The two-time Grand Slam champion held serve despite being in tears, but was soon defeated 2-6 6-3 6-4 by the No10 seed.

Krejcikova struggled throughout the third set and was regularly hunched over between points.

It brought back memories of compatriot Jana Novotna crying on the shoulder of the Duchess of Kent during the 1993 final, won by Steffi Graf.

Krejcikova was ruled out of Eastbourne ahead of Wimbledon due to a thigh injury and struggled with a back injury earlier this year.

Winner Navarro said: “Neither of us played our best tennis today.

“She was dealing with injuries at times and I was dealing with whatever I was dealing with.

“It was really tough today. She is an amazing player, injury or no injury.”

Meanwhile Krejcikova commented: “I was definitely enjoying myself on the court and I was feeling quite well.

“But then suddenly out of nowhere I just lost all my energy and I couldn’t really gain it back.

“I thought that it was the food, that I ate too early.

“That’s why I started with all the bananas and all the sugars and stuff inside.

“But I wasn’t really feeling better, I was actually feeling worse and worse with the time on court.

“It’s very sad for me and very unfortunate.”

As well as the defending champion, 2022 winner Elena Rybakina was also dumped out by Clara Tauson in straight sets.

That means there will be a new women’s champion at Wimbledon and a ninth consecutive different winner.
