Emotional moment Trent Alexander-Arnold pays respect to Diogo Jota as Real Madrid hold minute’s silence in training

REAL MADRID stars, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, held a touching minute’s silence for Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva ahead of their training session today.

Madrid took a moment to remember the pair following the news of their tragic deaths in a car accident.

The heartbreaking news that Jota, 28, and Silva, 25, had passed shocked the football world this morning.

The pair lost their lives in a tragic car accident in Zamora, Spain in a Lamborghini when the vehicle’s flat tyre suddenly burst and sent the car veering off the road, police believe.

Both brothers were professional footballers, with Jota playing for Liverpool and Silva on the books at Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel.

Real Madrid paid tribute to the brothers with a minute’s silence ahead of their training session in USA at the Club World Cup.

A post on Madrid’s official X account read: “A minute’s silence before training in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva.”

Involved in the touching moment was Trent Alexander-Arnold, who spent five years as Jota’s teammate, playing together almost 150 times.

Alexander-Arnold and Jota combined for 10 goals throughout their time together, while they shared success in the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Fellow Club World Cup sides Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain also took a minute’s silence for Jota and Silva ahead of their training sessions.

Included in PSG’s tribute was Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Joao Neves and Goncalo Ramos – all of whom played alongside Jota for the Portuguese national team.

Chelsea’s Pedro Neto, who played with Jota for Wolves and Portugal, did not train in the wake of his news about his friend.

UEFA have confirmed there will be a minute of silence during tonight’s Women’s Euros match between Spain and Portugal.

Jota had got married just 10 days ago to his long-term partner Rute Cardoso and the couple have three children, Dinis, Duarte, and a daughter who was born in 2024.

Personal tributes have also been flooding in for the star, with teammate Cristiano Ronaldo honouring the footballing brothers.

He said on Instagram: “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the selection, you had gotten married now.

“To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish you all the strength in the world.

“I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”

Lionel Messi posted a touching image of Jota making a heart symbol with his hands with the message “QEPD” – short for the Spanish phrase “que en paz descanse” which translates to “may he rest in peace”.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has shared his own statement on his “great friend”.

The German, who signed Jota from Wolves for £41m in 2020, said on social media: “This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose, but I can’t see it.”

He continued: “Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father.

“We will miss you so much. All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them.”

Fellow Liverpool icons such as Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler and David James have all also paid their respects.
