Rolly Romero Demands Small Ring for Brian Norman Jr. vs. Devin Haney Fight to Stop Haney’s “Running Around”

Rolly Romero Demands Small Ring for Brian Norman Jr. vs. Devin Haney Fight to Stop Haney’s “Running Around”

Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero says he’s hoping the Brian Norman Jr. vs. Devin Haney fight is fought in a “small ring” in November because he doesn’t want to see Devin “running around” the entire night. WBA welterweight champion Romero isn’t a big fan of Haney’s, and he says he hopes Norman Jr. will “flatline” him.

Turki Alalshikh announced the fight between WBO welterweight champion Norman Jr. (28-0, 22 KOs) and Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) this week for November in one of his Riyadh Season events. The undercard is expected to be loaded with talent.

Given how frightened Devin looked in his last fight at the Times Square event in New York, there’s a high possibility that he’s going to be on the move the whole night against Norman Jr., making it difficult for him to land his power shots. That would be a nightmare for Turki to have Haney turn the fight into a Tom and Jerry-type event.

Rolly Predicts Haney “Running”

“I hope Brian Norman flatlines him. Brian Norman is a tremendous fighter. He punches hard and all that stuff. I hope they put that fight in a small ring and they put ankle weights on so Devin Haney doesn’t run around like a turkey with his head cut off,” said Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero to Fight Hub TV, talking about the November fight between Brian Norman Jr. and Devin Haney.

Small Rings for Action Fights

Predictably, Turki Alalshikh will schedule the Norman Jr. vs. Haney event to be fought in an 18 x 18 ring in November. It wouldn’t be surprising if 18-ft rings become standard for Turki’s Riyadh Season events to ensure that fans are entertained by more action.

Ideally, a 16 x 16 ring should be used for all of Turki’s events, as this would guarantee that runners wouldn’t be able to spoil the party, as seen in the Times Square event in New York last May.

“Oh, I hope Brian Norman flatlines him,” said Rolly when asked who he hopes wins the Norman-Haney fight. “This is Brian Norman’s first test. So this is his pro debut. So, we’ll see how Brian does or if he’s able to pressure Devin, or if Devin is going to run around like a Turkey. Brian is going to have to work on cutting off the ring a lot for obvious reasons.”

If Norman Jr. catches Haney, he will knock him out. There’s no question about that, because he punches harder than Ryan Garcia, and he’s not going to take rounds off the way he did due to his poor gas tank in his fight with Devin.

Norman Jr. has fought good opposition before, but not with the popularity or the past achievements that Haney is bringing to this fight. Haney isn’t that much better than some of the fighters Brian Jr. has fought during his career. Skill-wise, Devin is better than everyone Norman Jr. has fought during his pro career, but not in terms of punching power.

“Look, no Tom and Jerry, right? So, no Tom and Jerry, but you’re going to keep giving these Tom and Jerry fighters opportunities,” said Romero.

Haney’s “Tom and Jerry” Style

Rolly brings up a good point. If Turki Alalshikh doesn’t want Tom and Jerry fights, why is he continuing to work with Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson? Those are two fighters who use movement to elude their opponents, and it’s often boring to watch them.

Neither of them is capable of keeping their pro careers going without using their hit-and-not-get-hit style of fighting. If you take Devin and Shakur and force them to be stationary, they’ll get destroyed by almost anyone in their weight classes.
