Lamont Roach Targeting Haney-Norman Jr. Winner After Gervonta Davis Rematch

Lamont Roach Targeting Haney-Norman Jr. Winner After Gervonta Davis Rematch

Lamont Roach said on social media that after he beats Gervonta Davis in their rematch, he’s going to move up two divisions to face the winner of the November fight between WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. and Devin Haney.

Devin Haney Laughs Off Roach

The comment from Roach was met with laughter and confusion by Haney (32-0, 15 KOs). It’s not a fight that he would be focusing on if he’s victorious against Norman Jr. (28-0, 22 KOs). He would likely be focusing on the biggest money fight available, which would be a rematch with Ryan Garcia or a clash against Teofimo Lopez.

“After I beat Tank, I’m fighting the winner of Devin Haney and Brian Norman. There you go. I’m not going to say it again,” said Lamont Roach on social media. “Y’all can clip it, y’all can do whatever. That’s what I’m doing. You heard it here first.”

Roach Lacks Power, Fan Appeal

Turki Alalshikh hasn’t mentioned who he wants the winner of the Haney-Norman Jr. fight to face next, but it’s unlikely that he would focus on using Roach as the opponent. He’s not well known enough to casual boxing fans, and his defensive fighting style would make it boring to watch. He has no power at 135, and he would be overmatched entirely against a big puncher like Norman Jr. at 147.

It wouldn’t be sporting watching Roach get beaten up by Norman Jr., as he wouldn’t be able to soak up the punishment that his last opponent, Jin Sasaki, did before getting stopped. Roach would cave almost immediately, and fans would feel ripped off if the event is sold on PPV.

Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) and WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis will be fighting in August for a rematch. In their previous fight on March 1st, they fought to a 12-round draw. Many fans felt that Roach was robbed of a victory. There was the knee incident in round nine in which Tank took a knee after being hit with a jab from Roach.

Davis then walked to his corner without asking for a timeout from the referee to have grease removed from his eyes. This should have resulted in a point deduction due to Davis taking a knee. The referee lost control of the situation. The scores were 114-114, 115-113 for Tank and 114-113.
