Canelo Alvarez Fires Back at Terence Crawford: “He Needs to Do Something More Than Just Move” to Win

Canelo Alvarez Fires Back at Terence Crawford: “He Needs to Do Something More Than Just Move” to Win

Canelo Alvarez says underdog Terence Crawford is going to have to “do something” other than just move around if he wants to dethrone him of his undisputed super middleweight championship on September 13th.

Crawford’s Underdog Challenges

  • Lack of power
  • Age
  • Weight difference
  • Inactivity

It doesn’t help that it’s believed that the main reason Terence is taking this fight is for the money. If he thought he could win, he’d have moved up to 168 and taken a couple of tune-ups since last year to prepare himself to get the victory.

Crawford hasn’t fought anyone with Canelo’s power before, and his shots won’t be hard enough to keep the Mexican superstar from walking him down. Canelo’s power advantage is going to be significant in this fight.

The weight disparity Crawford will be dealing with, going up two divisions from 154 to 168, will make it difficult for him against the natural 168-pounder, Canelo. The Nebraska native, Crawford, looked average in his debut at 154 against Israil Madrimov.

His power at 147 didn’t carry over to 154, and he couldn’t fight Madrimov off the way he’d done against opposition at welterweight.

Canelo’s Strategic Advantages

“I’m not going to underestimate him. I know he’s a great fighter, and he’s going to put his best in the training camp. But every advantage that I have, I’m going to take it,” said Canelo Alvarez to Ring Magazine about his fight against Terence Crawford.

It’s believed that Crawford, 37, will try to outbox Canelo by jabbing, moving, and tying him up, because he doesn’t possess the power to knock him out.

Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) doesn’t know what Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) can do to win, because he believes he’s got the experience advantage from fighting many talented fighters during his 20-year career.

Crawford hasn’t fought the big names that Canelo has because the weight classes he competed in during his best years lacked star power.

“I’ve been with every style. He’s different because he changes his guard. I hope Terence Crawford comes with a different mentality [than William Scull] and the people enjoy the fight,” said Caenlo. “From my side, don’t worry about it,” said Canelo about his intention to fight aggressively and hard.”

Terence’s Boxing Game Plan

Crawford is going to box because that’s all he can do. In his last fight against Madrimov, he was forced to box after tasting his power in the early rounds. He tried slugging it out with Madrimov, but abandoned it quickly after eating a lot of heavy shots.

“If he wants to win, he needs to do something in the fight. Not just moving around. He needs to do something. And, I hope he brings everything. This fight is a risk. It’s going to be a good fight, and I’m ready for everything,” said Canelo.
