Falcons GM Terry Fontenot reveals non-normal traits led to drafting million ‘violent’ rookie

The Atlanta Falcons are thrilled with how the NFL Draft turned out. The team will feature a young core on the defensive side of the ball, complemented by veteran leadership that could pave the way for success. Atlanta had one of the most impressive first rounds of any team in this year’s draft.

To start, the Falcons selected Jalon Walker, a standout linebacker from Georgia. Given that Atlanta is located in Georgia, it was somewhat surprising to learn that Walker is the first player from the University of Georgia ever selected by the Falcons in the first round.

“This is the first time in franchise history that the Falcons have taken a University of Georgia player in the first round,” wrote Sports Illustrated’s Daniel Flick.

Walker is expected to dominate on the field and become a nightmare for opposing offenses—so much so that he’s already drawing comparisons to Micah Parsons.

“The way he plays. The physicality. The toughness. The instincts. It all screams off the tape. … And he’s such a versatile piece that he can play on the edge. He can play stack. He can rush from any area on the field,” GM Terry Fontenot said.

However, the biggest headline of the night came when the Falcons traded next year’s first-round pick to the Rams in exchange for an additional first-round pick in this draft. The motivation was clear: Atlanta wanted James Pearce, an extraordinary athlete.

“You’ve got the 6-5 freak athlete. That isn’t normal to run a 4.4 when you’re 6-5 with the twitch, the suddenness, the burst, getting off the ball, all the things he can do,” Fontenot said. “And he’s a violent, disruptive player. Run game, too. He is a violent, disruptive player.”

Fontenot emphasized that Pearce has first-round talent and that reliable pass rushers are rarely found beyond Day 1 of the draft. While many teams overlooked Pearce due to false narratives, Atlanta believes they’ve landed something special.
