Oilers’ Connor McDavid gets $15 million per year contract update after Stanley Cup loss

Oilers’ Connor McDavid gets million per year contract update after Stanley Cup loss

Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid is eligible for a contract extension on July 1.

He’s going to get paid.

Pro Hockey Rumors projects McDavid to earn $14.5-15 million per year. That’d set a new NHL record for annual average value.

McDavid currently earns $12.5 million per year from his 2017 contract. That has since been passed by Nathan MacKinnon ($12.6), Auston Matthews ($13.25) and Edmonton teammate Leon Draisaitl, who signed last summer for $14 million per year.

The all-around superstar McDavid is regarded as the top player in the NHL, and it makes sense to expect him to command top dollar.

The only thing missing for McDavid is a Stanley Cup. And he just missed out again with a second consecutive championship series loss to the Panthers.

But that won’t stop the Oilers from giving McDavid the whole bag.

He’s still just 28 years old.

The 2015 No. 1 pick had 26 goals and 74 assists (100 points) in 67 regular season games this season.

So far in his career, McDavid has 361 goals and 721 assists (1,082 points) in 712 games.

The Oilers won’t want to ever risk upsetting the greatest player of his generation, so it seems unlikely that contract negotiations would even get that contentious. When it’s time, McDavid will get his money.
