The Boston Bruins decided to give one of their franchise legends a chance.
With the Bruins out of the playoff picture, they sent Brad Marchand to the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers at the trade deadline.
The job for the forward who turned 37 in May was to try and help the Panthers hold onto the hardware.
And on Tuesday night, that’s exactly what Florida did.
Marchand was a hero throughout the series.
He scored the OT game-winning goal in Game 2.
All told, he had six goals in the six-game series.
Marchand didn’t have a point in Game 4, when the Panthers lost in overtime. And he didn’t have a point in Game 6, the clincher.
But he went goal, then two goals, then goal, then after the scoreless game another two-goal game.
Talk about seizing the moment.
Marchand seemed energized by the Stanley Cup Finals stage. He may have wondered early in the season whether he’d ever get back to a team that gave him a chance at a second Cup.
But the Bruins did Marchand a solid, and he didn’t let the Boston faithful rooting for him down.
