Jaime Munguia’s Positive Test: Synthetic Testosterone Finding Jeopardizes Victory and Career

Jaime Munguia’s B-sample has returned a positive test for synthetic testosterone for his decision win over Bruno Surace for their rematch on May 3rd in Riyadh. Munguia’s victory over Surace (26-1-2, 5 KOs) could now be changed to a no contest, and he could face a suspension.

Munguia’s Positive B-Sample Test

Munguia’s victory has been undermined by the B-sample testing positive for an exogenous origin of testosterone, and it puts the 28-year-old Mexican fighter’s career in jeopardy. Going into his rematch with France’s Surace, Munguia had a 1-2 record, and his career was in bad shape.

Mike Coppinger revealed the news today of Munguia’s B-sample testing positive for synthetic testosterone.

When the initial positive test results were revealed on May 29th, Munguia expressed surprise, saying, “Several experts have explained that there are multiple ways contamination can occur.” He pointed out that he’s never tested positive before during his career.

Testing positive for the rematch against Surace doesn’t make sense. Munguia’s defeat last December was supposed to have been a situation where he just got caught with a shot while being reckless. The first fight was viewed as a cherry pick by Munguia, selecting the unknown Surace, who had never beaten any notable fighters during his career.

Jaime’s Career in Decline

Even with a six-month suspension, it will be difficult for Munguia to recover from this. He’d looked average in his losses to Surace and his defeat against Canelo Alvarez last year. If Munguia returns to being the mediocre contender that he’d been before, his career will be over. His ability was nowhere near the top level.

There are a lot of fighters in the top 15 that would feast on the version of Munguia that Surace knocked out last December in Tijuana.

Fans had wondered why Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) looked so impressive in his rematch with Surace. He was walking through Surace’s cobra-like right hands like they were nothing, and looking more powerful than he had ever appeared.

Some fans questioned how Jaime could go from the lackluster fighter that had been knocked out in six rounds last December to the Superman-like fighter that effortlessly defeated Surace in the rematch last May. Munguia won by the scores 117-111, 116-112, and 117-111.
