Could the Cleveland Browns really keep all four of their quarterbacks around?
That’s what GM Andrew Berry suggested recently, but there’s a huge risk involved.
There’s really only one roster structure way to keep all of Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders in Cleveland at once when the regular season gets here: the practice squad.
The Browns would have to place one of the rookie QBs on the practice squad, which inherently isn’t a bad thing, but there’s a catch.
To get to the practice squad, a player goes on waivers. And when a player is on waivers, another team can claim them.
Just based on draft status, Sanders would be the most likely candidate.
Even though he slid to the 144th pick in the draft, Sanders would be a coveted potential waiver claim for another team that has realized it is moving on from a different backup QB.

He’s an incredibly accurate passer with a great NFL pedigree. There are flaws, yes, but as a waiver claim heading into the new season to try to develop him as a backup or third quarterback? It’s a great plan.
Cleveland almost certainly can’t go through with this because of the waiver issue. Shoot, are they going to put third-rounder Dillon Gabriel on waivers before he suits up for a regular season game on the sideline? There’s no way.
It still feels like a trade or a cut of one of the veterans, most likely Kenny Pickett, is the probable outcome.
But it’s certainly a weird corner to be backed into, and it’s fair for the Browns to not overplay their hand yet.
