Dolphins Jonnu Smith’s future in Miami uncertain as trade talks hit stalemate

The Miami Dolphins are approaching a point where shedding contracts may soon become a priority. The first name likely to be moved is cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who has reportedly been at odds with the organization since April. The situation is believed to have deteriorated primarily due to relationship issues between Ramsey and the franchise.

Tight end Jonnu Smith has also been the subject of trade rumors, particularly involving the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although the initial talks were brief and appeared to die down, they recently resurfaced after the Steelers lost one of their tight ends to a season-ending injury, prompting the team to re-explore Smith’s availability.

“Back in it: the Steelers renewed conversations today with Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith, who is seeking a new contract. The trade between the Steelers and Dolphins is still alive, per source,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote.

Not everyone in Pittsburgh is excited about the potential move, given that the team already has Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington at the position. However, Miami fans received some encouraging news when Smith’s agent made it clear that his client prefers to stay put.

“Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami. That’s his first choice,” Drew Rosenhaus said, via Miami Herald reporter Barry Jackson. “This is where he lives in the offseason. He had a record-breaking season last year… His dream team is the Dolphins.”

Since then, Smith has been focused on securing a new deal with the Dolphins. According to Rosenhaus, progress is being made, though nothing is finalized yet.

“Nothing has been resolved yet. It’s still an ongoing situation. I would say that it will be resolved I think by training camp, but it’s still very active right now and nothing has been finalized at this juncture,” Rosenhaus said.

Smith clearly wants to spend the remainder of his career in Miami. However, with the team facing salary cap constraints, it all depends on how much the Dolphins are willing to invest in keeping him. For now, the situation remains at a stalemate.
