Eagles’ ex-QB Carson Wentz gets brutal free agent update after Chiefs decision

Of all the guys who started the offseason as free agent quarterbacks, it’s odd to see Carson Wentz still available.

He’s not flawless, but he was a strong starter back in the day for the Eagles and a solid backup most recently for the Chiefs.

But Kansas City chose not to bring the 32-year old QB back, and no one has him in their sights right now.

There might be only one team that even makes a little sense, according to ESPN’s Katherine Terrell: the Saints.

“Wentz, 32, spent the past season with the Kansas City Chiefs as a backup and hasn’t been a primary starter since his 2021 season with the Indianapolis Colts,” Terrell wrote. “Wentz’s best season was in 2017, when he went 11-2 as a starter with the Philadelphia Eagles and threw 33 touchdowns before tearing his ACL, opening the door for backup Nick Foles to win a Super Bowl that season.”

But even the Saints have a bunch of QBs on the roster. It’s all a matter of whether they feel confident enough in the overall group or if they feel they need some kind of veteran presence.

Wentz appeared in three games for the Chiefs in 2024, startnig one. He was 12-for-19 passing for 118 yards.

In 2023, he won his lone start with the Rams.

He played for Washington in 2022 (seven starts) and the Colts in 2021 (17 starts).

Overall in his NFL career, Wentz is 47-46-1 as a starter. He has a 62.7% completion percentage and 153 passing TDs compared to 67 INTs.

That really sounds like a guy some team should sign.

But right now, Wentz has no choice but to wait.
