Aaron Rodgers could recreate Randall Cobb-Packers connection with Steelers wide receiver

Aaron Rodgers could recreate Randall Cobb-Packers connection with Steelers wide receiver

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has had his fair share of fantastic wide receivers to throw to during his illustrious career, and Randall Cobb is no doubt one of them.

Cobb and Rodgers first linked up in Green Bay, where they spent a total of 10 years together. Then, the two reunited in 2023 with the New York Jets, although Rodgers missed all but three snaps that season due to a torn Achilles.

While Cobb isn’t returning to the NFL to join Rodgers in Pittsburgh, the future Hall of Fame quarterback may already have a similar player on the roster in second-year slot receiver Roman Wilson, according to Steelers Depot’s Jonathan Heitritter.

When you look at Roman Wilson as a pass catcher, he shares plenty of similar attributes to Cobb. They have similar measurables as Cobb, who stood 5’10, 192 pounds, while Wilson stands 5’10, 186 pounds. Wilson posted slightly better testing numbers when it came to straight line speed and change of direction quickness at the NFL Combine. Both were drafted on Day 2 and projected for similar roles in the passing game as more undersized technicians who should excel in the slot. Much like Cobb, Wilson was best utilized in the slot, having a strong release package to uncover quickly over the middle of the field and in the red zone to give his quarterback an open target.

Wilson was selected in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft, but his rookie season was a total wash. The Michigan product played just five snaps due to injury, and Wilson didn’t record a single reception in those snaps.

That makes the 2025 campaign crucial for Wilson, who needs to show he’s an NFL-quality starter or else the Steelers could look to replace him in 2026.

He couldn’t have a better situation to succeed, though.

Rodgers is an upgrade from the quarterbacks the Steelers had last year, and we know the veteran quarterback loves to utilize slot receivers. Further, Pittsburgh finds itself short at the position overall after the George Pickens trade.

But that does not mean Wilson will be peppered with targets by default.

He’s going to have to show Rodgers that he can be relied upon first, otherwise there is a very realistic scenario where Wilson could be left on the outside looking in as far as a role in the passing attack.
