Saints sign Super Bowl champion to spell Alvin Kamara

The New Orleans Saints still rely heavily on Alvin Kamara out of the backfield.

They’ve made moves this offseason to try and spell Kamara every now and then, though, to keep the veteran running back fresh.

The latest decision was made official on Friday: The Saints are keeping Cam Akers on a contract after he originally came in for a tryout.

Akers brings five years of NFL experience and a 2021 Super Bowl ring with him to New Orleans.

Still just 25, Akers won his Super Bowl with the Rams before also playing for the Texans and Vikings.

He was the No. 52 overall pick (round two) back in 2020 out of Florida State.

He has a career 4.0 yards per carry average (502 runs, 2,025 yards) with 13 touchdowns. Akers also has four receiving TDs in his career.

The Saints also brought in veteran Clyde Edwards-Helaire, formerly of the Chiefs, this offseason.

They drafted Devin Neal in the sixth round, and they still have 2023 third-rounder Kendre Miller on the roster.

Somewhere in that combination has to be a reasonable backup for Kamara who can fill in as needed.

It just might take the Saints a little bit of time to see which RB still has some juice left. Akers definitely has the experience and playoff pedigree, if that’s what the Saints want. They’re two traits that it doesn’t hurt to have around, especially on a potentially young and rebuilding team.

It’ll still be a couple months before New Orleans fans know for sure what is happening, but it’s positive that the Saints are adding more talent to a group that could certainly use some.
