Seahawks cut ties with coolest story on their roster in quick release decision

The Seattle Seahawks gave a chance to an incredible story for minicamp.

But Mitch Van Vooren didn’t make it through.

After signing the big tight end on June 4, the Seahawks announced they released him on Friday, June 13.

Van Vooren’s story would be cool already even if it just included the fact that he played Division III football at a school called St. Norbert after being a Division I track athlete.

But that’s not all.

Van Vooren also once announced an NFL Draft pick, back in 2016.

One of the most unique 2025 NFL Draft stories: Wisconsin native Mitch Van Vooren, who announced the #Dolphins’ seventh-round pick of a tight end in 2016, is now himself a tight end who could hear his name called in Green Bay. pic.twitter.com/lEZ8Wb6x6G

Van Vooren is 6-foot-5, 245 pounds.

At St. Norbert, he played 22 games, catching 65 passes for 1,045 yards and 13 TDs.

Before that, Van Vooren competed on the Marquette track and field team.

He was a star 400-meter hurdler, breaking the school record in what might be the most difficult race on a track.

Van Vooren also did the 400 hurdles at St. Norbert, making it to the D-III national championship meet.

He first attended Browns rookie minicamp, then got this short chance with the Seahawks.

It seems based on his athletic pedigree that another team might give Van Vooren a shot soon enough.
