Knicks in no rush, casting wide net in head coaching search

Knicks in no rush, casting wide net in head coaching search

While the Knicks are continuing to do their due diligence in their head coaching search, asking teams if they can speak to their head coaches to get a clear idea of who is available and who isn’t, the team is in no rush to make a hire, according to league sources in touch with the team.

The Knicks are looking to cast a wide net in their search, including unemployed NBA head coaches and current assistant coaches.

Clearly, there was no shoo-in replacement in the decision to fire Tom Thibodeau.

To reiterate, the timing of the Thibodeau firing was not tied in any way to the Suns’ decision on Johnnie Bryant, a former Knicks associate head coach. Bryant was a finalist for the Suns’ job, though they ended up hiring former Cleveland assistant Jordan Ott.

The Knicks formally requested to speak with Dallas head coach Jason Kidd on Wednesday, but their request was reportedly denied by the Mavericks.

The Knicks also reportedly reached out to request permission to talk to Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka and Minnesota’s Chris Finch, and were denied.
