Surprising name dubbed most overpaid player on New York Giants roster

The 2025 NFL season will be here before we know it, but with offseason workouts slowly coming to an end and training camp still over one month away, outlets across football media are taking deeper dives into rosters and judging everything from a team’s most overrated and underrated players to which dudes are the best bet to have a breakout season this year.

Payrolls are also being scrutinized, and whenever salaries are reviewed, the dreaded ‘overpaid’ label is applied.

For the New York Giants, that distinction belongs to veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, according to a recent breakdown by Yardbarker.

“The Giants signed veterans Wilson and Jameis Winston this offseason before selecting Jaxson Dart in the first round of the draft,” Seth Trachtman wrote. “Wilson could begin the year as the starter, but doesn’t look like the long-term quarterback in New York. His cap hit will be more than $11 million.”

While I get the logic behind this opinion, it still seems pretty flawed. An $11 million cap hit is peanuts for a starting quarterback, even if it’s for half of a season. And, remember: Wilson will provide value that goes way beyond his on-field production. Even if Dart becomes New York’s starter by, say, Week 10, Wilson will serve as another coach in the quarterback room for the young first-rounder.

And that has value. A lot of value.

In fact, Evan Neal’s contract calls for $7.8 million in 2025 despite a strong possibility he spends most of the year on the bench. Sure, he could emerge as a starting guard and resurrect his once-promising pro outlook, but it feels like a safer bet to assume Wilson will be a better value than Neal at this point.

If there’s a bigger takeaway from this ranking, it’s that the New York Giants don’t have many bad contracts on the books right now. If Wilson is, in fact, the most overpaid player on the roster in 2025, that’s actually a good thing.
