Tell me where you’ve heard this before: the Pittsburgh Steelers need a wide receiver.
After spending all of last year searching for a running mate for George Pickens, the Steelers finally landed one in 2025 in DK Metcalf. However, the Steelers jumped right back into the same boat after dealing Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.
With Pickens gone, the Steelers are relying on some shaky options to fill their No. 2 wide receiver role. Calvin Austin is best suited as a No. 3 option, Robert Woods is well past his prime and Roman Wilson still has something to prove.
If all three fail to step up, which is certainly possible, it’s going to be extremely tough for Aaron Rodgers to succeed in 2025 and we shouldn’t expected very different results as compared to Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in 2024.
Luckily, as Steelers Wire’s Curt Popejoy recently pointed out, there could be some decent options on the trade market for the Steelers to explore, and one of those is Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs.
“The Packers drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, giving them a great group of receivers,” Popejoy said. “If we assume Christian Watson will be back and Mecole Hardman can still play, Dobbs might want to come to the Steelers and play with Aaron Rodgers.”
The additions of Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the draft make an already crowded wide receivers room in Green Bay even more so.
That isn’t likely to sit well with Doubs, who was already disgruntled with his role in 2024, which led to a one-game suspension. The Packers might want to avoid any possible drama with Doubs and could look to trade him.
One thing that stands out with Doubs is that he already has a relationship with Aaron Rodgers after the two played together in 2022 in Green Bay. We know Rodgers loves to throw to guys he’s familiar with, which only adds to the speculation that he could go to Pittsburgh.
“Aaron Rodgers was very fond of Romeo Doubs when they were together,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer noted last month.
After posting 425 yards and three scores with Rodgers as his quarterback, Doubs has surpassed 600 yards in each of the past two campaigns. Despite playing in 13 games in 2024, Doubs still had 601 yards, just 73 shy of his career-high mark.
With a bigger role in Pittsburgh, Doubs could really take his game to the next level, and at 25 years old, he could also prove to be a long-term solution in Pittsburgh if he can play well enough to earn a contract extension.
Assuming the price is not outlandish, it just makes too much sense for the Steelers to bring Doubs in to bolster what is a major weakness.
