Chargers net 7-time Pro Bowl defender for next to nothing in trade prediction

For now, Jalen Ramsey is still a member of the Miami Dolphins. The two sides agreed to explore trade options earlier this offseason. It is now being reported that Ramsey will not attend a mandatory minicamp, so a trade could come soon.

The Los Angeles Chargers remain a team that is connected to a deal for Ramsey in trade proposals that have been put for by the media, but a recent trade idea made by Seth Walder of ESPN would give the Chargers the former first-round pick nearly for free.

Here’s Walder’s proposal:

Chargers receive: CB Jalen Ramsey, 2027 seventh-round pick
Dolphins receive: 2027 seventh-round pick

“The Chargers don’t need Ramsey, but they have something some other teams don’t: the cap room to absorb all of Ramsey’s guarantees. The Chargers have a little less than $32 million in 2025 cap space but more than $118 million in 2026 cap space (the most in the NFL, per Roster Management System).

Ramsey, who would probably push free agent signing Donte Jackson into a backup role, would raise the defensive ceiling for a team that could easily become a true contender”, wrote Walder.

This would be an incredible scenario for the Chargers. Of course, it wouldn’t quite be for “free” as the team would then have to take on the salary of Ramsey, but it is equipped to do that. It would amount to a salary dump for the Dolphins and a fresh start for Ramsey.

In 2016, many Chargers fans argued that the team should have taken Ramsey with the No. 3 overall pick. Joey Bosa was the selection instead and Ramsey went to the Jacksonville Jaguars two picks later. It would be ironic for the Chargers to release Bosa this offseason and then trade for Ramsey.

Ramsey will enter the 2025 season with over 500 tackles and 24 interceptions in his career. He’s been named to the Pro Bowl seven times in his nine-year career and even at 30 years old, is still one of the best cover corners in the league.

He would become a starter in L.A. and add to a secondary that already has Derwin James. If the Chargers can really get him for what Walder proposed, they need to consider it, even if Ramsey puts a good dent in the salary cap.
