Mason Rudolph shares reaction to Steelers officially signing Aaron Rodgers

On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Steelers finally signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal worth up to $19.5 million that includes a $13.65 million base salary and $10 million in guaranteed money.

Rodgers joins the Steelers with 62,952 passing yards, 503 passing touchdowns and 116 interceptions as well as a Super Bowl ring, a Super Bowl MVP award, four NFL MVPs, 10 Pro Bowls and five All-Pro selections.

Prior to the signing, Pittsburgh was expected to have Mason Rudolph under center, sixth-round pick Will Howard as the backup and former Miami Dolphins seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson as the third string. Now, they’ll all bump down a spot on the depth chart to give way for Rodgers.

After the news broke, Rudolph shared his opinion on the move at a Pittsburgh Pirates game, as he was throwing out the ceremonial first pitch for a game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

“I had a feeling they were going to bring somebody in. Obviously, Aaron was at the forefront of the conversation for a long time,” Rudolph said (via the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review). “It won’t change my approach. We’ve got one more week of practice coming up, our mandatory minicamp. It will be nice to get everybody in the building. I’ll keep doing what I’ve done my whole career. I’ve had plenty of adversity and found a way to battle through it. I stayed ready to play well when called upon.”

Rudolph signed a two-year, $8 million contract this offseason to return to Pittsburgh, the team that took him in the third round (No. 76 overall) back in the 2018 NFL draft, after serving as Will Levis’ backup with the Tennessee Titans in 2024.

“It provides clarity,” Rudolph said. “I’m excited to see a lot of the faces that are coming back, obviously Aaron. I’m just going to keep doing my job — that’s all I can do — and try to help my team win games.”

Rudolph has appeared in 29 games in his NFL career and has completed 63.7% of his passes for 4,615 yards, 28 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He also led the Steelers and Titans to a 9-8-1 record in his 18 starts.
