With the offseason addition of DK Metcalf, the Pittsburgh Steelers may be just one offensive piece away from becoming a contender. While continuing OTAs, there have been rumors that calls have been made for highly talented playmakers such as Jonnu Smith from the Dolphins, and now Kyle Pitts from the Atlanta Falcons.
Pitts hit the ground running his rookie season, totaling 1,026 yards, however this has not been the case since. Over the next three seasons he had 356, 667, and 602 total yards respectively. Although he has extreme upside and an athletic build for a tight end, it may be the perfect time for a team to acquire him while his stock is low.
NFL insider, John Middlekauf said, “Pitts is not that comfortable playing on the fifth year option for almost $11 million…the guy caught 47 balls and 600 yards and 4 touchdowns last year. I don’t know if that’s really the year to try to have a hardcore negotiation, especially when you’re on the books for almost $11 million.”
It is important to note that Pitts has not been the number one option in the Falcons offense, as Drake London and Bijan Robinson have been their main priority. Likewise, Pitts would be coming into Pittsburgh potentially in a dual role, as a tight end/wide receiver. He would be taking a similar backseat to Metcalf and Pat Freiermuth, while the quarterback situation is still up in the air.
Although the pieces would need to fall together perfectly, Jeremy Fowler did say, “It appears, talking to some other teams, they think Atlanta is at least open to the possibility, and Pitts might be as well.”
