The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the market for another wide receiver after trading away George Pickens, and the team currently has its sights set on a former Buffalo Bills wideout.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Steelers and wide receiver Gabe Davis will meet on Thursday in Pittsburgh. Schefter also adds that Pittsburgh is not expected to trade for Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith.
“Former Bills and Jaguars WR Gabe Davis is scheduled to travel to Pittsburgh on Wednesday to visit with the Steelers on Thursday,” Schefter reported. “Pittsburgh has been seeking additional receiving help and has inquired about, but is not expected to trade for, Miami TE Jonnu Smith.”
A trade for Smith would have been an interesting move considering the Steelers need a wide receiver much more than a tight end, and that’s especially true with Pat Freiermuth on the roster. Nevertheless, it looks like we won’t see that happen.
Davis spent the 2024 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars after signing a lucrative three-year, $39 million deal with the team last offseason. However, Davis fell well short of expectations in an injury-plagued campaign and was cut loose earlier this year.
Prior to his stint in Jacksonville, Davis was a fourth-round pick of the Bills in 2020 and posted some strong seasons in Buffalo, including two campaigns with 700 or more yards. His best season came in 2022, when he posted 836 yards.
The biggest knock on Davis is his inconsistency. Davis can have a huge game one week and then fails to exist the next.
That said, the Steelers can’t be picky in their current situation and Davis would still amount to an upgrade over any of the players not named DK Metcalf. Davis can make plays at all levels of the field and is a strong red-zone target.
With Davis coming off a lackluster season, he should come cheap, so there’s little risk involved in bringing him in.
