New York Giants linked again to star free-agent guard in latest prediction

The New York Giants’ offensive line, on paper, looks better than it did during the 2024 regular season, thanks in large part to the healthy return of left tackle Andrew Thomas.

Thomas represents a two-for-one upgrade for Big Blue’s offensive line; his healthy status means Jermaine Eluemunor can kick back to right tackle, which also allows 2021 first-round bust Evan Neal to give it a go at guard.

Still, the Giants are far from settled up front, which is why predictions for where the league’s remaining free agents may sign continue to link New York to former All-Pro guard Brandon Scherff.

“Outside of left tackle Andrew Thomas and center John Michael Schmitz Jr., every other spot on the offensive line is a question mark, with right guard being especially shaky,” Pro Football Sports Network’s Brandon Austin wrote. “Greg Van Roten is currently projected to start, but the Giants would be wise to explore veteran upgrades.

“Scherff, though past his prime at 33, remains one of the most reliable pass-blocking guards available. He didn’t allow a single sack over 592 pass-blocking snaps last season, a mark surpassed only by Trey Smith among all guards. While his last Pro Bowl came in 2021, Scherff still brings steady, veteran play that could immediately raise the floor of New York’s offensive line.”

While Scherff certainly doesn’t present as a long-term option for any team in the NFL right now, a club like the Giants, who will at some point be starting a rookie QB in 2025, could certainly use his experience and reliability.

And even if the five-time Pro-Bowler is a fraction of what he once was, he’d still be an upgrade for a New York Giants offensive line that continues to search for a year-over-year identity.
