New York Jets urged to sign former All-Pro wide receiver

New York Jets urged to sign former All-Pro wide receiver

The New York Jets are taking a leap of faith on offense in 2025 with the signing of former first-round pick Justin Fields at quarterback, whose dynamic dual-threat skill set should bring excitement back to MetLife Stadium this season.

But for Fields to do more than just hit the ground running, he’ll need help at wide receiver beyond Garrett Wilson, who should serve as his go-to guy this year.

The Jets’ current depth chart at receiver features Wilson, Allen Lazard, and Josh Reynolds, which is, at worst, respectable. However, a remaining unsigned veteran with five Pro Bowls on his resume would be a logical target for general manager Darren Mougey to consider: Amari Cooper.

In a recent breakdown of the one remaining free-agent signing that every NFL team should consider, Cooper was linked to the Jets as a good fit.

“Cooper’s size, experience, and route-running ability should still attract a Jets offense that finished 20th in EPA per dropback and 21st in pass success rate,” Pro Football Sports Network Brandon Austin wrote. “His ceiling isn’t what it used to be, but with Wilson leading the pack and a talented backfield that features Breece Hall, New York won’t need Cooper to be the top option.”

Cooper was supposed to be the wide receiver upgrade the Buffalo Bills needed in their Super Bowl run in 2024, but he managed just 20 catches for 297 yards and two touchdowns in the eight games he played for Buffalo after being acquired via trade from the Cleveland Browns.

And while Cooper’s sub-par production has soured his 2025 outlook, he’s still a strong route-runner with the kind of experience the New York Jets’ receiver room could use.

Amari Cooper will be 31 next season and is destined to sign a one-year deal with whichever team he joins, making him a low-risk, high-reward target for a receiver-needy team like Gang Green.
