Oilers’ Connor McDavid can mirror Wayne Gretzky’s Edmonton Stanley Cup history

Connor McDavid will always be compared to Wayne Gretzky.

That’s especially true because of their time specifically with the Edmonton Oilers. And for McDavid, the shoes to fill are quite large.

But McDavid would gladly follow in The Great One’s footsteps with one particular accomplishment.

In 1983, Gretzky and the Oilers went to his first Stanley Cup. They lost to the Islanders.

But a year after that, Gretzky and Edmonton got a rematch with the Islanders and beat them for Gretzky’s first Stanley Cup.

McDavid is trying to do the same thing.

The Oilers lost a classic seven-game series last year to the Florida Panthers. McDavid was brilliant, but it didn’t quite matter enough.

Now, Edmonton gets a rematch with Florida. McDavid will try to match Gretzky’s first Cup revenge.

They are two of three legends to accomplish this. Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby did it as well, losing to the Red Wings in 2008 and beating them in 2009.

McDavid is already one of just three players to have 20 or more points in four consecutive postseasons (a list that neither Gretzky nor Crosby are on).

Now, it’s time for the best player of his generation to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup.
