Tyreek Hill admits he studies Dolphins’ opponents by playing Madden

Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has become one of the more unique personalities in the entire NFL.

The speedster has been doing a good job making that known by staying in the headlines all offseason—most of it stemming from criticism of the Dolphins and his vocal frustrations with the team.

Hill has since walked back most of those comments, starting with his attendance at Miami’s OTAs, though he hasn’t participated due to recovering from recent wrist surgery.

“Every day I’m trying to prove myself as one of those guys that this team can depend on in crucial moments,” Hill said, via the Sun Sentinel. “It was tough, man. Obviously emotions were high then. But at the end of the day, I’m just looking to move forward from that. Hoping that I can prove myself and prove to my teammates that I’m still one of them ones, who [is] chasing 2K (yards), still one of those ones chasing playoff dreams and all that great stuff.”

Speaking to the media on Friday, Hill was asked how he prepares for games and studies film. The former All-Pro made a wild admission—he doesn’t watch film. Instead, he plays the Madden video game to gauge the cornerbacks he’s going to face each week.

“I just go, get on Madden. I go to the EA rosters, then I scroll down and see what their awareness is, speed is and they sprint. And that’s how I get a good tail on them,” Hill admitted.

That’s certainly a unique way to prepare for opponents and one that might come as a surprise to everyone, even his fellow teammates and head coach Mike McDaniel.

It’s worth noting that Hill is coming off his worst season in five years, falling under 1,000 receiving yards. Though some of that can be attributed to injuries and Tua Tagovailoa’s absence.

Nonetheless, Hill’s Madden admission raises the question of whether other players around the league do something similar, given how popular the video game is. If they did so last year, they would’ve seen that the Dolphins wideout was the only one with a 99 rating.

“Okay then,” Hill replied with a smiling emoji when the ratings were released last summer.

This year’s Madden game won’t be released until August, therefore no ratings have been revealed yet.

Rest assured Hill will be waiting to purchase the game to get ready when the Dolphins face the Colts in Indianapolis in Week 1.
