Munguia Tests Positive for Testosterone, Surace Demands Overturned Win

Munguia Tests Positive for Testosterone, Surace Demands Overturned Win

Jaime Munguia has reportedly come up dirty on a drug test, coming up positive for exogenous testosterone metabolites from a urine sample from his May 3rd victory over Bruno Surace in their rematch in Riyadh.

Munguia’s Failed Drug Test

Mike Coppinger reports that the urine from his A-sample from Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) was taken on May 4th. The Eddy Reynoso-trained Munguia has “10 days to request  analysis of his B-sample for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites.”

Not surprisingly, Surace, 26, isn’t happy at learning that Munguia tested positive for “exogenous testosterone metabolites,” and he wants the results of their fight to be “overturned immediately.”

Some fans noted that Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) looked like Superman, beating the previously undefeated Surace (26-1-2, 5 KOs) by a one-sided 12-round unanimous decision in their rematch on May 3rd. The scores were 117-111, 116-112, and 117-111.

Munguia looked like a different fighter than in his first fight against Surace on December 14th in Tijuana, which he lost by a sixth-round knockout.

Bruno Surace Reacts to PEDs

“I’m shocked by the news that Jaime Munguia tested positive for a banned substance,” Bruno Surace told The Ring. “There’s no place in boxing for cheating; the sport is dangerous enough already. “I went to Mexico and knocked out Munguia fair and square in December, and I was gracious enough to give him a rematch in May. He knew he could not beat me on a level playing field. I trust that this result will be overturned immediately.”

Surace had looked like 24k gold in his first fight against Munguia, lighting him up with his cobra-like right-hand shots. In the rematch, Jaime took his shots as if they were nothing.

It’s a surprise to fans that Munguia, 28, tested positive for a PED, as he’d never come up dirty before during his long 12-year professional career. However, suspicious fans argue that he had a lot at stake, needing to avenge his loss to the little-known Surace to keep his career alive as one of the major players at 168.

Munguia wasn’t supposed to lose the first fight last December, as Surace was seen as a cherry pick by him and his management. With this positive test, boxing fans on social media now believe his victory over Bruno was enhanced with the help of a banned PED. They see it as an illegitimate win. It wasn’t Munguia’s natural self.

Will Munguia’s Victory Be Overturned?

Fans question whether Munguia will be penalized and have his victory overturned due to his marketability. He’s popular in Mexico and the U.S. There’s a lot of money to be made from his fights if his victory is upheld, and his B-sample tests negative for exogenous testosterone metabolites.
