Falcons 13,703-yard career receiver admits personal frustration in famous 28-3 Super Bowl collapse

The Atlanta Falcons haven’t been to the playoffs in what feels like a long time. One of their most recent appearances came several years ago when they made a run all the way to the Super Bowl. That game remains one of the most heartbreaking moments in Atlanta sports history.

At the time, wide receiver Julio Jones was in his prime and shared a strong connection with fellow Falcons great quarterback Matt Ryan. Recently, Jones announced his retirement on a day that holds deep meaning for Falcons fans around the world. Atlanta is a city full of symbols, and Jones chose a particularly symbolic day to make his farewell.

“I’m making this announcement today because of the city of Atlanta,” Jones said in the video. “Thank you, man. I appreciate y’all. It’s nothing but love. I’m doing this on 404 Day.”

With Jones now retired, many assumed the Falcons might consider retiring his number. However, that may not be the case, as rookie Jalon Walker is set to wear No. 11.

Jones’ only shot at a Super Bowl ring came in the infamous game against the Patriots, where the Falcons held a commanding 28–3 lead at one point. Despite his elite performance throughout his career, Jones has admitted that the memory of that game is still too painful to revisit.

“I have yet to go back and watch it,” Jones said. “I had four opportunities the whole game. That’s insane. That is ridiculous. 4 targets in the Super Bowl.”

Jones, known for his consistent dominance as one of the league’s top wide receivers, didn’t have the kind of highlight-filled night that many dream of as kids. Instead, he was one of the least-targeted players on the field. His comments reflect a deep frustration—one that seems to be directed, at least in part, toward Matt Ryan for not getting him the ball more often.

Blowing a 28–3 lead and only being targeted four times in the biggest game of his career are scars that will likely stay with Jones forever.
