Steelers told to not let Aaron Rodgers ‘anywhere near the building’ as free agency drags on

Aaron Rodgers remains a free agent. The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to look like the heavy favorite to land him.

But one prominent ESPN analyst is urging the Steelers to run in the other direction, going so far as to say they shouldn’t let Rodgers “anywhere near the building.”

Mike Wilbon feels that the Steelers and Rodgers simply aren’t a good match.

“What are we talking about?” the long-time host of Pardon The Interruption wondered. “Do people just look at actually what happens in sports? Aaron Rodgers hasn’t been relevant as a quarterback in the NFL for four or five seasons. The hallmark of the Pittsburgh Steelers is not stupidity. It’s a smart organization that makes right moves over decades. And they’re gonna bring Aaron Rodgers in, with all his drama, into that room?”

It doesn’t appear the Steelers will side with Wilbon here, but he brings a different take to the matter.

Rodgers had a losing record in his final season in Green Bay, played four snaps in his first season with the Jets before tearing his Achilles, then went 5-12 last season.

The Jets didn’t want the 41-year old back, opting to get younger and more athletic with Justin Fields as their new QB.

The Steelers have sort of wound up as the Rodgers landing spot partially by default. The Giants ended up with Russell Wilson, and the Vikings stood firm with J.J. McCarthy.

Pittsburgh’s other QB options are Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Skylar Thompson, so the future Hall of Famer can probably be a legitimate help there.

At this point, it’d be more shocking if Rodgers didn’t sign with the Steelers. Wilbon just doesn’t seem to think it’ll work out very well.
