Steelers have one issue stopping them from signing Aaron Rodgers

Steelers have one issue stopping them from signing Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers spoke recently about the struggles in his personal life that have delayed his offseason free agency decision.

From the Pittsburgh Steelers’ perspective, though, there might also be one other hold-up.

This speculation comes from The Pat McAfee Show’s Steelers correspondent, Mark Kaboly.

Kaboly says Rodgers might want to do something in Pittsburgh that a QB hasn’t done since Ben Roethlisberger: Call his own plays.

“I’ve heard rumblings of Rodgers wanting to call his own plays,” Kaboly said. “I don’t know how true that is, so just keep that in the back of your mind more than a report or anything to that fact. I mean he’s been in the league 20 years. He has four MVPs. You have to assume some of that was going to be that anyway.”

Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith hasn’t had a QB of Rodgers’ caliber, but he hasn’t entrusted that duty to a lesser quarterback yet, either.

“Do you think the playbook matters to Aaron Rodgers? Because I really do believe that it’s gonna be Aaron Rodgers’ playbook. He’s gonna call what he wants to call and that might be a little bit of a battle,” Kaboly said. “I wanna believe that Aaron Rodgers is gonna get a lot of carte blanche when it comes to this offense. What he wants to do and what he wants to call.”

It does make sense that the Steelers would make some concessions for Rodgers.

At the same time, they just watched a Jets offense molded around Rodgers and his best friends go 5-12 in 2024.

They may be thinking that it’s time to rein Rodgers in just a bit.

The deal getting done still appears the most likely outcome, but things don’t appear to be perfect, either.
