Bill Haney’s Fight List: Too Good for Devin?

Bill Haney’s Fight List: Too Good for Devin?

Bill Haney released his 10-fighter hit list for his son, Devin Haney, to fight, and fans view it as overly ambitious. Most of the fighters on the list would be too good for the shell-shocked Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) in his present form, particularly Jaron Ennis, Gervonta Davis, and Teofimo Lopez.

Bill views Teofimo as the gold standard for who he wants Devin to fight next, but he’s entirely out of reach. A fight between Lopez and IBF and WBA welterweight champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is in the works for the summer. Teo isn’t changing his plans for a big-money fight against Boots to take on Haney in what would likely be a lowly undercard assignment.

Haney’s Performance Concerns

Fans believe those fighters would destroy Devin and finish what Ryan Garcia started last year. Bill seems to be trying to lure a big name for his struggling son, Haney, to fight after his abysmal performance against Jose Ramirez on May 2nd.

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya gave Haney the bad news on Wednesday, telling the media, “No, that’s not the direction we want to go. Zero whatsoever.” De La Hoya burst Bill’s dream of Devin getting a lucrative rematch with Ryan, who he’d been waiting for a year to fight after the New York State Athletic Commission suspended him for popping dirty for PEDs a year ago.

Bill is going to need to revise his list and take a more realistic view of who he can potentially get for Haney to fight. The vast majority of the fighters that he’s chosen for his 10-fighter list wouldn’t be interested in fighting Haney right now. They’re either busy or wouldn’t want to fight him because there’s no upside.

2.Shakur Stevenson

3.Gervontaa “Tank” Davis

4.Jaron “Boots” Ennis

5.Brian Norman Jr.

6.Mario Barrios

7.Keyshawn Davis

8.Rolando “Rollie” Romero

9.Conor Benn

10.Ryan Garcia

Turki: Haney’s Last Hope?

What Bill has to hope for is Turki Alalshikh coming to Devin’s rescue, offering one of those fighters a ton of money to fight Dev. I don’t know that he would have Haney’s safety-rist performance against Ramirez on the Times Square card in New York City on May 2nd.

If you’re Turki, you’d want to go in another direction rather than using Devin again because he fights too much like Shakur Stevenson. Turki already has him fighting on his July 12th card in New York. There’s no need for another Shakur-esque fighter to put on a boring performance.
