Last time Stars won Stanley Cup: Complete finals, playoff history for Dallas

The Stars haven’t won a Stanley Cup this century — but it’s not like the team hasn’t come close.

The last time the Stanley Cup was brought back to Dallas, stars Jason Robertson and Miro Heiskanen weren’t even born yet, while goaltender Jake Oettinger was a few months old.

However the team is knocking on the door, with 2025 marking the third consecutive year that the Stars have reached the conference final

When was the last time the Stars won the Stanley Cup?

The last time a Stars team hoisted the Stanley Cup was in 1999.

Dallas faced off against Buffalo in one of the great goaltending duels. The Stars’ Ed Belfour went head-to-head in the crease against the Sabres’ Dominik Hasek, and neither disappointed.

The Stars defeated the Sabres in six games to win the Stanley Cup. After Buffalo scored three goals in Game 1 and Dallas had four goals in Game 2, no team scored more than two goals in any game the rest of the series.

The low-scoring matchup ended in controversy. In Game 6, the two sides were knotted at 1-1 after regulation. The game required triple overtime, where Brett Hull eventually scored the Cup-clinching goal. However, a new change to the NHL rulebook that season caused Buffalo to protest the goal.

Hull’s skate was in the crease for the game-winning goal, which was against the rules at the time. The recent rule change stated that a goal would be disallowed if a player was in the crease prior to the puck entering the area.

Despite the rule, the NHL confirmed the goal call and the Stars hoisted the Stanley Cup. The play goes down as one of the most controversial calls in NHL playoff history, and is known among Sabres fans and hockey diehards simply as “No Goal.”

How many Stanley Cups have the Stars won?

The Stars’ win in 1999 is the only Stanley Cup won by the franchise, including when the team was the Minnesota North Stars before relocated to Dallas.

In addition to appearing in the 1999 Stanley Cup Final, the Stars have played in the championship series two other times. The year after hoisting the Cup, Dallas threatened to go back-to-back but lost to New Jersey in the 2000 Stanley Cup Final.

The Stars also made it to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020, losing to the Lightning.

Stars playoff history

While the Stars have been back to the championship round twice since last hoisting the Cup in 1999, they haven’t been able to cash in.

Their most recent Cup loss in 2020 gave the fans hope that a championship season could be near.

2021 didn’t go as planned and 2022 saw a quick playoff exit.

Here’s the Stars’ recent playoff history.
