De La Hoya: Haney’s a “Runner,” Garcia Needs Romero Rematch

De La Hoya: Haney’s a “Runner,” Garcia Needs Romero Rematch

Oscar De La Hoya confirmed today that Ryan Garcia will target a rematch with Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero to avenge his loss to him on May 2nd, not a rematch with the “Runner” Devin Haney. That’s the one he wants for Garcia next.

Haney a “Runner”

De La Hoya ruled out a rematch with Devin Haney, saying there is “Zero” interest in a second fight with him. He pointed out that Haney’s stock dropped from his performance on May 2nd against Jose Ramirez, and that he’s a “Runner.”

Right now, the timing is not good for a rematch between Garcia and Haney. Both need to win and look impressive. Devin must show courage and stand and fight whoever he faces next.  That’s not going to make Haney and his dad, Bill, happy, because they’ve been pushing for the rematch with Ryan since last year.

With it now off the table, Devin is going to need to fight someone else, and he doesn’t look capable of beating anyone decent. He’s not going to be able to fight another old veteran again without getting dumped on by fans. Haney got his tune-up against Jose Ramirez, and he now needs to fight someone good if he wants to continue to enjoy the kind of money he received for the May 2nd event.

The way that De La Hoya spoke, he doesn’t seem interested in Garcia ever fighting Haney again. However, Turki Alalshikh will likely choose to set up the rematch. That’s going to need to happen soon because Devin may continue to put on disappointing performances.

In Ryan’s case, he didn’t look like the Superman version that crushed Haney last year. He made the very limited Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero look good, and that’s hard to do. Fans think Rolly improved. He didn’t. It was just that Garcia looked mentally disengaged and not interested in going to war with Rolly, as he needed to. Ryan wasn’t up to the task of earning his reported $20 million purse.

Haney’s Stock “Super Down”

“No, that’s not the direction we want to go. Zero whatsoever,” said Ryan Garcia to Fighthype about the possibility of a rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. “It doesn’t merit a rematch.”

“Devin actually lost in winning [against Jose Ramirez on May 2nd]. His stock is super down,” said Oscar. “People are talking about him just being a runner, not a boxer. This guy [Haney] is a runner. Why would I want to see that?”

Some fans enjoy watching runners. That’s why Shakur Stevenson is so popular—fans who like watching the fencing style that Shakur, Devin, and Richardson Hitchins use. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough of them for those fighters to be the A-side for PPV events.

“That’s exactly what I would do,” said Oscar about taking the rematch with Rolly Romero if he were still fighting. “So, that would be the right move for him. Go get revenge. So, might as well.”

We’ll see if Ryan agrees with De La Hoya’s wish for him to fight Rolly again. If Garcia is just in it for the money at this point in his career, he might refuse to take the rematch with Romero, and push for the Haney fight. Promoter Eddie Hearn says he thinks Ryan has lost his love for the sport and is just focused on the money.
