Packers propose drastic ‘Tush Push’ rule change in bid to outlaw controversial play

The Green Bay Packers are looking to contend in a stacked NFC North. The division is loaded at the top this season with the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions. While the Packers are often considered an afterthought, they’re a team capable of winning the division as well.

The biggest concern heading into the season is, without a doubt, Jaire Alexander. Alexander is a lockdown corner when it comes to man-to-man coverage, but questions remain about whether he’ll actually suit up for Green Bay this season. The latest update indicates that there is still communication between him and the team.

“Alexander has not reported to the Packers’ voluntary workouts, which would raise red flags over his status with the team. While speculation has run wild, passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley sang a different tune, telling ESPN’s Rob Demovsky that he’s been in contact with Alexander every day while skipping the offseason workouts,” Chris Schad wrote.

While Alexander’s situation remains unresolved, the Packers are also focused on getting the Philadelphia Eagles’ controversial “tush push” play banned. The “tush push” is when the QB lines up under center and the guys behind the QB all push him forward.

“The other kind of storyline of that game is the fact that this whole ‘tush push,’ it was the Packers who actually… they were the biggest proponents of trying to get it taken out of the game,” Troy Aikman said. “It hasn’t been ruled out yet but there’s a good chance we won’t have it this year.”

On Monday, the Packers submitted a revised proposal to ban the tush push for good. The suggested rule change would prevent an offensive player from pushing, pulling, lifting, or assisting the runner in any way—unless it involves blocking a defender.

It’s still unclear whether the tush push will be outlawed, but one thing is certain: the Week 10 Monday Night Football showdown between the Packers and Eagles will be a must-watch. If the play remains legal, it’s almost guaranteed that the Eagles will run it at least once against Green Bay.
