Steelers predicted to abandon Will Howard experiment in favor of 64-TD quarterback

Steelers predicted to abandon Will Howard experiment in favor of 64-TD quarterback

As of now, it’s hard to judge the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offseason.

The team made some solid moves, such as trading for star wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and signing solid veterans Darius Slay and Malik Harrison. In the draft, the team then added some intriguing prospects like running back Kaleb Johnson and defensive lineman Derrick Harmon.

However, this can’t be considered a great offseason because the quarterback position is still an unknown. The team brought back veteran backup Mason Rudolph this offseason and drafted Will Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Neither Rudolph nor Howard likely inspire much confidence as the starter, though, and as a result, the team is still being linked to veteran Aaron Rodgers.

Even if the team brings Rodgers in, though, the veteran isn’t a long term option as he’s on the wrong side of 40. Brentley Weissman of Pro Football Network, therefore, has the Steelers selecting Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Regarding that selection, Weissman offered the following:

The Pittsburgh Steelers elected not to draft a quarterback in last year’s draft, but I fully expect them to be in the market here in 2026. Luckily for them, next year’s class has plenty of potential options to choose from.

Drew Allar is a polarizing prospect, and I actually like him much more than this draft selection would say. I think he has a chance to go in the top three of next year’s draft. He has all of the physical attributes you want, played well in Penn State’s biggest games last season, and did so without much help from his receivers. If he takes a step forward, watch out.

Allar likely could have been a first-round selection in this year’s draft, but the talented passer decided to return to Penn State for one more season.

As Weissman mentioned, Allar could easily end up being a top-three pick next season. In that case, the Steelers likely wouldn’t be in position to draft him, but there’s no predicting how it could go a year out.

In 2024, Allar threw for 3,327 yards with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The quarterback has exceptional accuracy and solid arm strength. Allar also has deceptive athleticism and rushed for 302 yards and six scores last season.

Allar would seemingly be a great fit in Pittsburgh. The quarterback grew up just two hours away from Pittsburgh excels for the in-state Nittany Lions. If the team isn’t sold on Howard, don’t be surprised if they get aggressive next offseason to land a potential franchise passer like Allar.
