Eddie Hearn Predicts Canelo Alvarez Retirement After Terence Crawford Fight, Citing “Father Time” and Recent Performance

Promoter Eddie Hearn believes the Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez will hang up his gloves after his fight against Terence Crawford. Hearn says he thinks “Father Time” has caught up to the soon-to-be 35-year-old Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs) after watching his performance against William Scull on May 3rd in Riyadh.

Winnable Fights Remain

Alvarez looked as bad in that fight as he had in losing to Dmitry Bivol in 2022. He was fortunate that Scull lacked the willingness to stand and fight because he was getting the better of Canelo during the exchanges due to his hand speed and surprisingly good power.

What Hearn doesn’t make sense. Canelo still has three fights on his contract with Turki. His first fight of his original four-fight contract with Turki was against William Scull.  Canelo’s second fight will be on September 12th, a title defense against the 37-year-old Crawford, then his third and fourth fights in 2016 February and October.

The third fight for Canelo could be a rematch with Crawford in February 2026 or, more likely, a clash against the winner of the Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Conor Benn. The fourth fight will almost surely be against the winner of the Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz bout. Those are winnable fights for Canelo; he won’t turn those down. Those aren’t slick fighters that move around like Crawford, and he’ll be able to walk them down to unload bombs.

“I believe the deal with His Excellency is for three fights. I think the Crawford fight will be his last,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to Ring Magazine about Canelo Alvarez possibly retiring after. “There’s no intel there, and I’ve not had any conversations with him. But after watching that Scull fight after Crawford, what else is there for him to do?”

Blue-Collar Mindset

Canelo likes money too much for him to walk away from his last two fights on his four-fight contract after the Crawford clash. Even if he loses that fight to Terence, he won’t retire because of pride and the dough. Canelo wasn’t born from wealth. So, he’s got a blue-collar mindset that makes him want to get as much money as possible. He believes in work. The Mexican star is different than the average fighter, who, after making millions, sits around, not training, getting fat, and living the soft life of the nouveau riche.

“Do you want to go to England for a fight? Yeah, I guess that could appeal to. But I don’t know. I just think Father Time, the body, the mojo, I don’t know. I actually thought during the Scull fight, ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if he just didn’t fight Crawford,’” said Hearn.

Alvarez isn’t the fighter he used to be, but can still beat fighters like Berlanga, Eubank Jr, Benn, and Sheeraz. Those are the guys he would be fighting to finish his four-fight contract with Turki and make a treasure chamber worth of gold bullion. He’s NOT going to retire without getting that gold. Hearn sounds like he knows what he’s talking about with his guesswork.
