Steelers predicted to ditch Aaron Rodgers, sign former $3.9 million Pro Bowl quarterback

Steelers predicted to ditch Aaron Rodgers, sign former .9 million Pro Bowl quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers still don’t have an answer at quarterback. The team added Ohio State signal-caller Will Howard in Round 6 of the draft, but the 23-year-old isn’t ready to be a starter yet. The only other quarterbacks currently on Pittsburgh’s roster are Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson.

Obviously, the Steelers are pursuing Aaron Rodgers and hope to sign him at some point this offseason. However, if the 41-year-old decides to retire or opt not to join Pittsburgh, CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo believes general manager Omar Khan should pursue free agent signal-caller Tyler Huntley.

“While there are still parts of his game that need refining, Huntley would nonetheless be a very viable option for the Steelers if Rodgers decides to spend the 2025 season doing something else with his time,” DeArdo wrote.

Huntley has been a backup for most of his five-year career, but has made 14 starts, posting a 5-9 record and tossing 11 touchdowns to ten interceptions with a 64.6% completion rate.

The Utah product spent the 2024 campaign with the Miami Dolphins, making five starts and holding his own. Huntley is best known for his stint with the Baltimore Ravens, where he was Lamar Jackson’s backup and was shockingly selected to the Pro Bowl in 2022 as a replacement for Josh Allen.

Though Huntley has shown some promise as a starter, the 27-year-old is best suited as a backup and isn’t good enough to start a full 17-game slate. The Steelers, who already have three backup-level signal-callers on the roster, don’t need to add another one and create a crowded quarterback room of average players.

Huntley should be able to find a home before the 2025 campaign kicks off, as he is a viable and experienced backup. However, he can’t be the starting quarterback of a playoff contender, so the Steelers will have to look at other options.
