For a team that didn’t make any large-scale changes to their coaching staff or front office, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the most-discussed teams in the NFL this offseason.
Part of that has come from their quarterback situation, with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson signing elsewhere and Aaron Rodgers still considering signing with Pittsburgh. The other part comes from the massive moves they made to change up their wide receiver room, including acquiring DK Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks and sending out George Pickens in a separate deal with the Dallas Cowboys.
On top of the pair of trades, the Steelers also signed veteran wideout Robert Woods, who will likely be second on the depth chart behind Metcalf at the position. This may lead to some younger guys losing opportunities.
In fact, Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder recently left 2024 third-round pick Roman Wilson off of his projected starting lineup for the Steelers in 2025 and had Calvin Austin III among the top three wideouts.
Wilson, 23, played his college ball at Michigan from 2020-23, earning All-Big Ten honors and winning a national championship while catching 107 passes for 1,707 yards and 20 touchdowns in 46 games with the Wolverines.
After the Steelers took Wilson with the 84th overall pick in last year’s draft, an ankle injury caused him to miss the first five weeks of the season, and just one game into his rookie season, he suffered a hamstring injury that knocked him out for the rest of the year. In total, he played just five offense snaps in 2024.

Wilson hasn’t done anything in the NFL to guarantee him a starting spot yet, but he should have an opportunity to compete for the slot job the offseason program and into the preseason with Austin.
Austin has caught 53 passes for 728 yards and five touchdowns in 34 games over the last two years, so that experience gives the former fourth-round a leg up for the battle.
However, if he beats out Austin or Woods looks like he’s lost a step at 33 years old, Wilson could find himself catching passes from whoever is under center for Pittsburgh early in Week 1.
