Steelers predicted to ditch Will Howard after 1 season in favor of dynamic 31-TD quarterback

Steelers predicted to ditch Will Howard after 1 season in favor of dynamic 31-TD quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers waited until Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft to address the quarterback position, as the team used the No.185 overall pick in Round 6 on Ohio State signal-caller Will Howard.

Howard has potential and did post an excellent 2024 campaign for the National Championship-winning Buckeyes. However, CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso predicts the Steelers will ditch Howard in next year’s draft and select Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt in Round 1.

“Leavitt looked the part of the modern-day mobility-based quarterback in his breakout 2024 with the Sun Devils. A former four-star recruit and the No. 18 quarterback in the 2023 quarterback class, Leavitt has first-round skills, and the Steelers need a long-term answer at the quarterback position in the worst way,” Trapasso wrote.

Leavitt impressed in 2024, tossing 24 touchdowns to just six interceptions with five rushing scores and leading the Sun Devils to the College Football Playoff. The 20-year-old’s dual-threat abilities make him an exciting prospect at the next level, and he’s also growing as a passer.

There’s a really good chance Pittsburgh is in the quarterback market once again next offseason, as the franchise doesn’t have a starting-caliber signal-caller currently on the roster and will likely only have Aaron Rodgers for a season if he eventually signs.

Selecting Leavitt in Round 1 would be a savvy move by the Steelers if he takes the next step in 2025. The Portland native was a pivotal piece to Arizona’s improbable turnaround in 2024, and his dynamic skillset at quarterback could translate well to the NFL.
