One of the people who reached out to Shedeur Sanders following his legendary NFL draft slide last month was future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady.
During an appearance on the “Impaulsive” podcast, Brady revealed that he texted the Cleveland Browns fifth-round pick after he was drafted and offered him some sage advice.
“I was [drafted] No. 199 overall,” he said of his text to Sanders. “So who can speak on it better than me? Like what that really means. Use it as motivation, you’re going to get your chances and go take advantage of it.”
Sanders made his Browns practice debut last weekend during the team’s rookie minicamp and spoke about what he took away from his conversation with Brady
“That was it, that my story’s going to be similar,” Sanders said, according to ESPN Cleveland’s Justin Cooper. “I was a late-round draft pick, but we’re here now, so none of that stuff matters. That just mattered on the day, and I’m just excited to be here, ready to work.”
One of the biggest surprises about Sanders’ draft slide is that the Las Vegas Raiders, who Brady is a minority owner of, did not take a chance on him at any point.
That’s surprising because Brady and Sanders have a good relationship that goes back years, and the Raiders don’t have a long-term solution at quarterback.
While some have charged Brady with being the reason why the Raiders didn’t draft Sanders, the New England Patriots legend has denied that’s the case.
“I wasn’t a part of any evaluation process,” he said of Sanders. “The problem with media is everyone can just say whatever the [expletive] they want. And it’s kind of unfortunate because there actually used to be a lot of integrity in media and there’s way less now because everyone needs crazy voices to get heard.”
There has been enough evidence to suggest that Brady was at least somewhat in on the draft evaluation process, but none of that really matters at this point and what’s past is past.
Now, the Raiders will move forward, as will Sanders with the Browns.
