Aaron Rodgers free agent pitch sends quarterback to NFC team, not Steelers

Aaron Rodgers free agent pitch sends quarterback to NFC team, not Steelers

The overwhelming expectation is that quarterback Aaron Rodgers will either sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers or retire. However, one analyst believes there could be another option: the New Orleans Saints.

The Sporting News’ Daniel Mader recently named Rodgers as a possible option for the Saints in free agency in the wake of Derek Carr announcing his retirement.

“Of course, all signs and reports have pointed to the Steelers eventually landing Rodgers in free agency, but the quarterback changing his mind wouldn’t be the first time he made a surprising decision,” Mader wrote. “Perhaps Rodgers sees more of a fit in New Orleans than Pittsburgh.”

Carr’s retirement comes on the heels of the news that he needed shoulder surgery that would knock him out of the entire 2025 campaign.

“Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League,” he said. “For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience.

“It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.”

Carr’s retirement now leaves the Saints with an even more unsure situation under center. The team is left with three unproven players in 2023 draft pick Jake Haener, 2024 draft pick Spencer Rattler and 2025 draft pick Tyler Shough.

With such an inexperienced quarterbacks room, it would make sense for New Orleans to bring in a veteran.

Rodgers going to the Saints remains highly unlikely, though.

After all, the future Hall of Fame quarterback is going to be looking for the best chance to win a Super Bowl. While certainly not a Super Bowl contender, the Steelers offer a better chance to accomplish that than New Orleans does.

The Saints are best off taking the season to evaluate their three young quarterbacks rather than trying to bring in Rodgers, who isn’t likely to elevate the team enough to make it worth signing him and passing on the youngsters.

Meanwhile, Rodgers will likely choose the Steelers or retire, and we think it’ll be the former.
