The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback situation has never been more uncertain. The team did select Will Howard in Round 6 of the 2025 NFL Draft, but the Ohio State product likely isn’t ready to be a starter yet.
The Steelers are still waiting on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision on his future. The 41-year-old could opt to retire instead of signing with Pittsburgh, and if that happens, CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo believes general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin could turn their attention towards Kansas City Chiefs free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz.
“His days as a starter might be behind him, but it appears that Wentz has settled into the next phase of his career as a reliable backup. Wentz’s experience (he has 95 career starts under his belt), solid career numbers (that includes 153 touchdowns against just 67 picks) and professionalism should make him an attractive option for Pittsburgh if Rodgers doesn’t sign,” DeArdo wrote.
Wentz has started just nine games over the last three seasons, and most recently served as Patrick Mahomes’ backup in Kansas City in 2024.
Though Wentz hasn’t seen the field much lately, the former No.2 overall pick still has a ton of starting experience and would be a solid addition to the Steelers’ quarterback room. He could compete with Mason Rudolph for the backup role and serve as the starter if needed.
Additionally, Wentz won’t be expensive to sign. Spotrac projects the former Pro Bowler will land a one-year deal worth $1.9 million, and that number could be even lower, given that he is still a free agent after the draft.
Obviously, Wentz is no longer a starting-caliber quarterback and wouldn’t solve Pittsburgh’s biggest issue at the position. However, the North Dakota State product could be a valuable depth piece for the Steelers and be the backup plan if Rodgers decides to bail on them.
